Things To Consider Before Buying A Recreation Vehicle

A good example of this is a couple I once had shopping for a travel trailer. The one thing they were sure of was that they wanted bunk beds for their three young children. I had several floor plans available on the lot, with bunk beds, to choose from. I showed them the first model and a few moments later they were convinced that this was the trailer for them. The husband liked the pass through storage compartment that could accommodate his fishing gear and the wife fell in love with the interior colors and décor. They purchased the trailer and I saw them at the dealership after they used it for the first time. They told me all about their first trip and how fun it was, but said they wish they would have given more thought to the floor plan before they bought it. The living room was on one end of the trailer, the kitchen was in the middle, and the bunk beds and bathroom were on the other end. She told me the kids were constantly going from one end to the other and she could never get anything done in the kitchen.

This is just one example, but I'm sure you get the picture. Sometimes we get caught up in the excitement and make hasty decisions that we regret later. Purchasing an RV is a major investment, similar to buying a house. It is after all your home away from home and we need to slowwww down the buying process and make informed decisions.

Rv Awnings

I'm not really sure where to begin. I guess the best place to start is with the dealership. You need to find a reputable RV dealer that is willing to take care of you after the sale. If at all possible talk to some one that has dealt with them before. A reputable dealer wants your business and they want you to return to them for future business. I have been in many dealerships that I wouldn't hesitate to do business with and I have been in others that I couldn't leave soon enough. Don't be afraid to ask them to give you a tour of the dealership. Look at the service department. Do they have certified technicians? Do they have the capability and facilities to do routine maintenance and warranty work on the units they sell? Look at their Parts and Accessory department. Do they offer a good selection of parts and accessories? Do they have a good selection of RVs to choose from? How long have they been selling certain manufacturer brands?

Things To Consider Before Buying A Recreation Vehicle

A reputable RV dealer will in most cases have a reputable, professional sales staff to assist you. If you feel comfortable with the dealership and would like to look at some of the RVs on the lot it's time to find a salesperson. This is not difficult because they will usually find you first. It is extremely important that you feel comfortable with the sales person. If you don't, ask to speak to some body else. Don't be afraid to help the sales person help you. What I mean by this is, tell them what your needs are, what you want and how you plan to use it. If you're going to buy a towable RV and you already have the tow vehicle ask them to explain the weights to you and to show you which RVs are in your weight range. A knowledgeable sales person can be a real asset, especially if you are new to RVing. If you prefer to look by yourself ask them for their business card and write down any questions you have so you can ask them later.

I mentioned a moment ago that you should have some idea of what your needs are, what you want, and how you plan to use it. This is extremely important. Review manufacturer brochures and websites for pertinent information that can assist you in making informed buying decisions. Here are a few things to consider before you buy.

>What type of RV is best suited for you and your family? What type of floor plan will work best for you and your family? Do you plan to travel cross-country with the RV or is it going to be set up at one location and left there? If you're going to be towing the RV is the tow vehicle capable of handling the weight of the RV and do you have the proper hitch work to safely tow it? How many people will be in the RV and what are the sleeping requirements? Is there enough seating space? Do you need a slide out(s) for additional living space? If you get slide outs how is the RV interior affected when they are in the stored, travel position? Is their enough outside storage, and are the storage compartments large enough to accommodate what you plan to take? Is there enough closet, cabinet and drawer space for all of your personal belonging? Are there enough cabinets and drawers in the kitchen? Don't forget about the pots and pans. How much counter space does it have in the kitchen? Is it enough? Where is the dinette table in relation to the range, oven and the refrigerator? Does it make sense? How does the bed feel when you lay down? Is it long enough and wide enough? Can you walk around the entire bed or is it built into the corner of the walls? Are there windows where you want windows? Is the refrigerator large enough? Can you reach the microwave? Is the A/C ducted throughout the unit? If not will it cool the entire unit? Do you prefer a split bathroom where the shower is separate, or a bathroom where everything is together? Can you stand up in the shower? Is the bathroom large enough? Can you sit on the toilet? How much fresh water can you take with you? Is it enough? How large are the gray water and black water holding tanks? Are they large enough for the way you plan to use the RV? How much LP gas does it hold? Is it enough for how you plan to use the RV? Is the RV to big or to small for your needs? If you want a motor home drive it before you buy it. If you're towing a vehicle behind the motor home what are the weight limits? What type of electrical service does the RV have, 30 Amp or 50 Amp? Do you need a generator? If equipped with a TV where is it located in relation to the seating arrangements? How many TV outlets do you want? Do you need a phone jack? Does the RV have an awning? If so, where is it situated, does it interfere with any storage compartments or windows etc? How long is the warranty on the RV? Do you need extended coverage to protect your investment? How is the RV constructed? If it's a travel trailer / 5th wheel do you prefer a corrugated aluminum or fiberglass exterior? How hard is it to keep clean? If you're buying a motor home do you want gas or diesel? Which type is more practical for how you plan to use it?

This list is not all-inclusive but it should help you make a more informed decision before you purchase an RV. Another important consideration is the options on the RV. When a dealer orders an RV they order the options that they feel will help sell the RV based on their experience. On the other hand they can limit the options to make the price more appealing, but it may be some options that you really want or need. Sit down with your sales person and review what options are on the RV and what options are available. If you found a floor plan that you really like but it's not equipped the way you want have the dealer order one for you. I know that waiting is difficult, but remember slowww down, it will be worth the wait to get the RV you really want.

Things To Consider Before Buying A Recreation Vehicle

RV Pricing - How To Determine Used RV Prices

Whether you are looking to sell your motor home, travel trailer or 5th wheel it is important that you have a full understanding of what your recreational vehicle or RV is worth. The market changes on a regular basis. Therefore, it is important that you know about rv pricing and used rv prices, so you know how much you can actually sell your RV for.

One of the first conditions that will affect the selling price of your RV is the time of year you are selling it. If you try to sell your RV in the off season, you are less likely to get your desired asking price. Generally, buyers add in the fact they will have to store it for the winter when purchasing an RV. Therefore, they will generally offer you a much lower price. The off season is a bad time to sell your RV because many buyers are not in the market for an RV. In the spring time, buyers are geared up for the upcoming camping season and therefore more likely to pay closer to your RV's worth.

Rv Awnings

The condition of your RV will also dictate its worth. If you are trying to sell a newer RV in mint condition, you are more likely to get a fair price for it. However, if you are trying to sell an RV that is older or one that needs some type of repair, chances are you will not get your full asking price. Therefore, when putting your RV up for sale, make sure you fix any chips in the paint or appliances that are not working.

RV Pricing - How To Determine Used RV Prices

You will want to make sure that your RV is as clean as possible. Remove any clutter from the RV to make sure that it looks as spacious as possible. Do a thorough cleaning of the unit to make it truly shine.

Mileage is another determining factor for your asking price if you are looking to sell a unit that contains a motor. If the mileage is high, your RV will be worth less than if you were to sell one with low mileage.

Another determining factor to consider is what accessories you have in your RV. Accessories such as satellite dishes, A/C units, solar panels and awnings will add extra value to your RV.

If you place an ad to sell your RV, be sure to word it properly. You will want to list all of the wonderful features the unit has. Have a friend read over your advertisement before placing it. They can give you a legitimate idea whether you need to add additional information or remove something that might be distracting to potential buyers.

When pricing your RV do not compare it to other units that dealers are selling. Whenever a dealer is selling a used unit, they must jack the price up in order to make a profit. Therefore, check out a company that specializes in the pricing of RV's by the general public, such as Kelly Blue Book.

Before listing your RV for sale, be sure you have a full understanding of what your unit is worth. The more reasonably priced your unit is, the more likely it is to sell.

Camper Awnings - RV Awnings Review and Why You Need an Awning For Your Camper

Camper awnings are a great way to add a little bit of extra space to your camper or motorhome, and if chosen well, this could also be at a fraction of the cost that you originally envisaged. Most modern day camper van awnings are made of very sturdy materials, are long lasting and are usually very easy to clean and maintain.

Awnings For Campers
Awnings for campers are a great way to add a little extra seating space, working space or even dining space to your cramped quarters in the camper. Choosing a camper van awning that can be easily put up, but is strong enough to withstand the natural elements is important.

Rv Awnings

Fiamma Camper Awnings
A worthy contender in the area is the Fiammastor, an offering from Fiamma. Reputed to be very lightweight, the Fiammastor is easy to put up, and is fully extended in next to no time. There are many conveniences to this camper awning. First off, doors and windows can be kept open even in rainy weather, allowing for air circulation throughout the camper.

Camper Awnings - RV Awnings Review and Why You Need an Awning For Your Camper

In hot weather, simply putting up the Fiammastor camper awning can reduce temperatures inside the camper by as much as twenty degrees. You could even use the Fiammastor camper awning as a form of protection against the weather. Take off your wet gear under the confines of the awning, and keep your camper clean and dry. If you have ever had to take off wet squelching boots inside a camper, you'll know what a veritable treat a dry camper can be!

A simpler variant is the Rhino Rack Sunseeker awning. A rather simpler affair, this model has the important advantages of cost and convenience. A simple two-legged affair, the Rhino Rack Sunseeker simply uses the rail of your camper as support, with two legs on the other end providing cover for whoever happens to be underneath. Very quick to set up and dismantle, the Rhino Rack Sunseeker is the model for you if are on a limited budget, or if space comes at an increasing premium.

Whichever model you end up choosing, you'd do well to carry a camper awning along on your road trips. The weather can be notoriously fickle, and some form of protection from the natural elements is always welcome. So go ahead and get yourself one!

Winter RV Battery Storage

The two most common causes for RV battery failure are undercharging and overcharging.

Undercharging is a result of batteries being repeatedly discharged and not fully recharged between cycles. If a battery is not recharged the sulfate material that attaches to the discharged portions of the plates begins to harden into crystals. Over time this sulfate cannot be converted back into active plate material and the battery is ruined. This also occurs when a battery remains discharged for an extended period of time, like during storage. Sulfation is the number one cause of battery failure. The second leading cause of battery failure is overcharging. Overcharging batteries results in severe water loss and plate corrosion. With that said let's look at how to properly store your RV batteries.

Rv Awnings

Before we talk about storing the batteries we need to talk about battery safety. Lead acid batteries contain sulfuric acid which is extremely corrosive and can cause severe burns or even blindness. And the hydrogen gas that batteries produce when they're charging is very explosive. When you work around batteries you need to wear goggles and gloves, remove all jewelry and do not smoke or use any open flames.

Winter RV Battery Storage

Caution: If you accidentally get battery acid on your skin, flush it with lots of water and if it gets in your eyes flush with low pressure water for 15 minutes and call a doctor.

When you put the RV in long term storage it's a good idea to remove the batteries and put them in storage too. This is quite simple to do. The first thing we want to do is visually inspect the batteries for any obvious damage. Any fluid on or around the battery may be an indication that electrolyte is leaking from the battery. A damaged or leaking battery should be replaced immediately. Whenever you remove any battery always remember to remove the negative terminal or cable first, and then the positive cable.

Battery Tip: When you remove a battery turn off the ignition switch, all electrical switches, and any battery disconnect switches before you disconnect the battery cables. Whenever you remove any battery cables label them first so you remember how they go back on the battery. When you reinstall the battery do it in the reverse order. Install the positive cable first and then the negative cable.

Clean the batteries with a 50/50 mixture of baking soda and water if necessary, i.e. use one pound of baking soda to one gallon of water. Now you can check the electrolyte level in each cell and add distilled water if necessary. The minimum level required is at the top of the plates. If it's below the plates add enough distilled water to cover the plates before you charge the battery.

Test the battery state of charge with a voltmeter or hydrometer and charge any batteries that are at or below 80%. An 80% charge is approximately 12.5 volts for a 12 volt battery and 6.25 volts for a 6 volt battery. Lead sulfation starts when a battery state of charge drops below 80%. After charging the batteries check and fill each cell to 1/8 inch below the fill well with distilled water. Overfilling cells will cause battery acid to overflow.

Caution: Batteries should only be charged in a well ventilated area and keep any sparks and open flames away from a battery being charged. Check the electrolyte levels before and after charging batteries.

A discharged or partially charged battery will freeze much faster than a charged battery. Store the batteries in a cool dry place but not where they could freeze. Batteries in storage will loose a percentage of current through internal leakage. It's not uncommon for a battery to discharge up to 10% a month when it is being stored. Cold temperatures slow this natural discharge process down and warmer temperatures speed the process up. Test the
stored battery state of charge every month and charge batteries that are at or below an 80% state of charge.

Completely charge the batteries before re-installing them next spring. For optimum performance you can equalize the batteries after they are fully charged. An equalizing charge is an increase in charging voltage similar to a bulk charge to convert any crystallized lead sulfate back into its original components.

If you decide to leave the batteries in the RV while it is in storage remember to check the state of charge monthly and charge any batteries at or below an 80% charge. Some RV converter multi-stage chargers and aftermarket chargers are designed to maintain a float charge on the battery without removing the batteries from the RV. Remember, for the converter charger to work the RV will need to be plugged in to electricity.

RV Awning Repair

RV trailers have given a lot of travelers the most convenient and fun way to travel. Who will not be happy that you are actually traveling but with the same convenience of being at home. This travel trailers can also be seen owned by movie stars that they use when they go to location shooting.

The range of prices for RV can be from average to the most expensive depending on the model and brand or even how luxurious the travel trailer can be. This is why making sure that the trailer is maintained and taken care of properly is a one of the owner's priority.

Rv Awnings

One of the parts of the trailer that usually requires repair is the awning. The awning is like a roof extension of the trailer that you can use when you want extends your space. It can be a good protection from the sun or rain when you are outside our trailer; this is why it is mostly damage and needs a good repair.

RV Awning Repair

Ways on how to repair your trailer's awning

Actually, there are two great ways on how to repair your awning. You can do a tape repair or a sewing repair. Both ways have their good side and bad side and it is up to you do decide which method is best for your trailer.

Taping can repair your trailer's awning very fast and you do not need to ask for professional help. You can do the taping yourself. However, keep in mind that taping may not be so durable. Also, if the tear or the rip is very long taping is not a good idea anymore.

Sewing can definitely amend the damage of your trailer's awning. The sewing process can be more durable that taping. The thing is, you need a professional help to saw your awning for you, unless you know how to sew properly.

Other parts of your RV's that might needs repair

Do not forget that your awning have other parts that might need repairs like Awning torsion assemblies, Rafters, Awning arms or supports, RV pull straps and etc. First you have to see if the parts are repairable or if it needs replacements. Look for the manuals if you still have it find the best way how to give remedy to the parts of the awning.

It will be great if you look for the brand of your awning parts and check out their stores if they offer any repairs instead of buying new parts. Some parts may actually have warranty that you can use for your repair.

However, do not be too concern on how to save money by doing repairs. If your awning needs a full replacement since the parts are not recommendable for repairs, then you must replace it. A good replacement is actually a good way of repairing the problem. Do not forget that your trailer's awning in actual roof placed outside your trailer. It can cost you more damage if not repaired properly.

Improve Your RV Refrigerator Performance With a Cooling Fan

When the temperature gets hot out, your RV refrigerator can struggle to keep it's temperature cool enough to avoid food spoilage and to keep your beer at the perfect drinking chilliness. There are several factors that contribute to refrigerator efficiency, such as the sun beating down on the refrigerator side of your RV, or a dirty gas burner creating a poor heating flame. Even the levelness of your RV can cause inefficiency over time. One of the simplest and most effective mods that can be made is to improve the ventilation at the back of the refrigerator by using a fan to direct air up and out of the refrigerator vent column.

An RV refrigerator is not like a residential unit. It uses a heat absorption system rather than an electric compressor, condenser, and evaporator, as a residential refrigerator does. Heat absorption requires removing the heat from the absorption unit via chemicals and air circulation. This is accomplished by convection or draft. A narrow space behind the refrigerator allows cooler air to be drawn in to the space at the bottom of the unit. The air rises and passes over the heat absorption unit fins, and out of the vent on the roof above the unit.

Rv Awnings

Some refrigerator installations actually prevent this convection action to work. In a typical RV installation, a dead air space can exist directly above the refrigerator. This space can trap warm air and drastically reduce the draft effect. This reduction in draft is why you should do the refrigerator cooling fan mod. While not a cure all for a poor refrigerator installation, a fan can dramatically improve refrigerator cooling performance.

Improve Your RV Refrigerator Performance With a Cooling Fan

There are several fan types that can be used for this mod. It is recommended that you use one of the permanent-mount types as the battery-powered kind can require frequent replacement of the batteries, especially if you forget to turn the fan off when not using it. Some use computer fans that are 3 to 4″ in diameter. These require little power and move a surprising amount of air.

A thermostatically-controlled fan however, is the best way to install a refrigerator ventilation fan. These are permanently mounted and have a thermostat that provides power to the fan when the ambient air temperature reaches some set point. Different temperature set points are available with the most common switching at 80°F. A switch can also be wired in to the fan's power supply so that you have control over when the fan is on.

There is some debate as to where the most effective place to install the vent fan. Camco, for example, has a solar powered fan and refrigerator roof vent combination. This puts the fan at the top of the vent stack, pulling air through the lower vent and up through the roof vent. Still others mount the fan at the bottom of the vent stack, right at the lower vent. This position pushes air up through the stack. Both have been found to work equally as well so the choice is your on which way to go. Either way, using a vent fan will ensure a cold beer on a hot day.

Tip: Try to park your RV where the refrigerator side of the RV will be in the shade as much as possible. This will help reduce temperatures inside the refrigerator vent column dramatically. If shade is unavailable and your refrigerator is on the curb side, use the awning to provide shade.

Adding Or Upgrading an Audio Video System in Your RV

When integrating an audio video system into a recreational vehicle special care must be taken. There are a lot of considerations you need to think about before you decide what type of system is right for you and your family. With today's manufactures offering 12volt standard and marine grade systems, adding indoor/outdoor audio was never easier. Since most RV's and campgrounds have a 110volt supply, this gives you the ability to integrate home AV equipment with your 12volt systems.

We should first talk about your options and what you may want your system to do. Video is one of the main components of a good RV system, considering how much time is spent inside your RV (bad weather, preparing meals, entertaining the kids and for motor homes when your driving). With the ability to source audio and video signals you can have one central media player device and display it's contents in multiple zones. In other words you can watch a movie on all TV's or watch different shows on each TV independently. So the children can play games or view their shows in their room and you can listen to music or watch a movie in the living room and even finish it in your bedroom. With the introduction of marine grade flat panel TV's, it's even possible to have video outside under your awning. There are many options for your video source, most trailer parks offer cable TV. Satellite TV is another good option and can be set up on site, or a mobile dish system can be installed on the top of your RV, this is a great option for motor coaches where your passengers have the ability to watch TV as you drive. You may also use a digital antenna to receive free broadcasting where available. Now that we have covered network broadcasting, let's talk about media players. A typical source would be a DVD/CD or Blu-ray player, remember when making your choice that you can play all types of audio and video on a Blu-ray but can't play Blu-ray on a DVD/CD player. A media sever is a compact hard drive unit that allows you to store movies, albums, photos, etc., these are a great option if you already have all of your media on your home computer, just upload to the server and take it with you. The navigation of the media server is similar to an iPod screen and is displayed on the television.

Rv Awnings

Now that we've covered video let's talk about audio. Most new RV's come with a stock stereo system of some sort, but the quality isn't there (if it is turned up loud it crackles and sounds distorted). This isn't as bad as it sounds, often with the addition of a good amplifier and replacement of the stock speakers this problem is resolved. Care must be taken when performing this type of installation, make sure you know what wires go where, and don't add extra speakers without powering them correctly. Adding outdoor speakers is one the most common upgrades. Before doing so make sure that you buy the correct speakers, they must be marine grade to with stand the elements. Just like the video system your audio can be sourced. So before you buy, think about what your trying to accomplish. One thing often overlooked is how loud you really need your system to be, remember most RV parks have rules and quiet time so spending lots of money on a killer audio system may be a waste and would have been better spent on another flat panel, media server, etc..

Adding Or Upgrading an Audio Video System in Your RV

Installation is as important as the equipment you choose to buy. Unless you have done this type of work before it's highly recommended that you have it done professionally. Remember you will be dealing with two different electrical system both 12V and 110V, serious damage can occur if things aren't hooked up correctly. Here at Serious About Sound LLC our technicians can help you with the design and choosing the right products for you and your families needs. We also offer installation of all our maufacturer's products. We are fully insured and have a secure facility to accommodate most larger size RV's. If you are a dealer, Serious About Sound can provide you with on site installations. We try to make it easy for dealers to use our services on new and custom ordered RV's.

The Jayco Baja Camper:

This is definitely the most unique of the three as it has an outdoor bike port that can be used to store two bikes, and alternatively, an ATV. Ramps to load and unload are bikes also come with the camper. This camper succeeds in blending together the concepts of a camper and a toy hauler quite nicely. Thanks to the outside cargo deck that comes with the ramp and railing, loading and unloading your toys for hauling becomes quite easy. The four floor plans that you can choose from include 10C, 10D, 10Y, and 10Z. All these floor plans come with a double bed on one end and a king sized one at the other. The variation in these plans is essentially with the central area, the seating/dinette area, port-a-potty cabinet, storage cabinets, and the kitchen area. The Baja can comfortably sleep six people, and if the space in the Baja seems inadequate, you can look at the Jayco Select.

Select Campers:

The Jayco Select campers come with one floor plan, the 12HW. This model is larger than most other pop up campers, and owing to its high walls, extra space is made available from the top to the bottom. This model comes with a queen/king bed on both the ends of the trailer, and there is a fair amount of storage space as well. Repo RVs - Buy A Cheap RV From Auction

According to recent surveys, people prefer buying RVs since according to them having a motor home nearby makes it easier for them to go away over the weekend which in the long run will help contribute in creating stronger bonds among family members.

But brand new RVs costs a lot. That's why buyers are looking for cheaper places to buy their own RV. They look at dealers of second hand RVs as well as repo rv auction. Repossessed RVs might be the better deal between the two.

Rv Awnings

When you look for an RV, whether in a repo rv auction or in a dealership, it should contain the basics. A minimal RV normally has beds, food preparation and storage areas and at least one table. The bigger the RV the more equipped it becomes. There are RVs that have full bathrooms, living areas, refrigerators, and even master bedrooms.

Repo RVs - Buy A Cheap RV From Auction

You might also chance upon more elaborate RVs in a repo rv auction. These RVs features satellite TV and internet access. Some even have slide-out sections, and awnings. But the more the amenities the more expensive the RVs become. A typical RV can reach between ,000 to 0,000 when brand new. While some still costs more than that.

Just imagine how much you'll save if you buy an RV from a repo rv auction. The basic thing to remember when you go to a repo rv auction is that to be focused and determined. Give yourself a ceiling on how much you would bid for a RV unit. Never join a bidding war since this is a sure way to lose money rather than to save some. Decide on the matter before you go to the auction and stick to it.

Make sure that you inspect that conditions of the RV as well as the amenities or equipment inside. If you have time, which in a repo rv auction you usually don't, give each equipment a thorough check. Each not working or damaged equipment brings down the overall value of the RV.

You should also need to have a basic guide book on how much a used RV should cost, how much if damage to it or the equipment inside are substantial. This will ensure that any bidding you do in a repo rv auction is based on facts and not mere speculations.

Trailer Weights

There has always been confusion when it comes to trailer weights. I can't begin to tell you how many times I have seen people read the manufacturers weight label on the outside of the trailer or fifth wheel and assume that they can't tow it. The data plate on the outside gives you the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR). This is not the actual weight of the trailer; it is the maximum amount of weight that the trailers axles, brakes, tires and other components can support. The trailer might weigh 5,000 pounds, but the GVWR may be 7,000 pounds. This means that you could add 2,000 pounds of weight to the trailer before you reach the GVWR. You need to consider how much weight you will add to the trailer when you are calculating this number. You never want to tow a trailer that exceeds the GVWR. The components on the trailer are not designed to exceed the GVWR and it can be extremely dangerous, or fatal.

Any manufacturer that is a member of the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) is required to have a weight rating label inside the trailer that will give you more weight information. Look for it on the back of a cabinet or closet door. It will provide information on the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), the Unloaded Vehicle Weight (UVW) or Dry Weight (DW), which it is commonly referred to, the weight of the fresh water tank and LP gas when full, and the Cargo Carrying Capacity (CCC) for the trailer.

Rv Awnings

The UVW is the actual weight of the trailer as manufactured at the factory. You also want to find out if this weight includes options on the trailer. When a dealer orders a trailer they list the options they want on it. These options include, but are not limited to, the roof air conditioner, awnings, stabilizer jacks, and a spare tire. You can see how quickly weight can add up on the trailer.

Trailer Weights

Be careful when you look at the weights in the manufacturers brochures. In most cases these weights are for the base model trailer without options, and depending on what they consider to be options the weight can change drastically. It is not uncommon to see a brochure weight of 5,000 pounds, but the actual weight of the trailer is 5,700 pounds or more. 700 pounds can make a big difference when your tow vehicle is on the border of its maximum tow rating.

Tips for Keeping Your Camper Awnings Clean

For many people, their camper is an extension of their home, and your home is your castle. Not too many people want to live in a shabby, run down and tired looking home, so why would they want to live or travel in a less than clean and tidy looking camper. Camper awnings are one of the accessories of a camper, but they bring a certain life and style that just does not exist without them. It is therefore important that you keep them clean, neat and tidy. After all, how often have you gone to a campground and seen that the camper in the space next to yours had camper awnings that were run down, patched, downright dirty or even growing mold?

Camper awnings are easy to keep clean with a bit of preventative maintenance and regular care. One of the first things that you will want to do is store them during inclement weather. If for some reason you have been away during a sudden storm, then you will want to allow the awning fabric time to dry before rolling them away. Trapped moisture can cause the awning to mold, making it more susceptible to further damage. You should also always remove debris such as twigs before rolling your awning up, as twigs and branches or other debris could cause a tear or hole to develop. Camper awnings are not inexpensive to replace, so it is in your best interest to make sure that you always take good care of them.

Rv Awnings

To clean any stains, mold or mildew that has developed on your awning, you will want to clean it using a mild detergent solution such as dishwashing soap and warm water, together with a soft bristled brush. You will then want to rinse it off and allow it to air dry in the sun. It is best to do this on warm sunny days, as you will not want the moisture to pool and create a nice environment for the development of further mold or mildew. You can also use this method to remove any animal urine or fecal matter from the awning. If you feel that you would like to disinfect your awning, it is best not to use any kind of harsh or abrasive cleaning material. A very mild disinfectant or alternatively, vinegar or lemon juice, can be used when mixed with your detergent solution.

Tips for Keeping Your Camper Awnings Clean

In addition to the fabric of your camper awning, you will need to periodically check the braces to make sure that they are in good working order and free of rust or mildew. Also be sure that they are tightly secured to the camper. This will help keep your awning in good and working order. If the braces are loose, the awning can become damaged if the braces break free.

Taking care of your camper awning will ensure that your camper always looks bright, fresh and in good condition. This is not only important for your enjoyment, but also for resale value, should you ever decide to sell.

How to Adjust RV Trailer Brakes

Trailer brakes should be adjusted at least once a year, more often depending on the miles traveled, the severity of the downhill grades, and the amount of stop and go traffic that is encountered. This is a chore that most people with average mechanical skills should be able to handle.

You will need a brake adjusting tool, available at most tool supply stores, a jack capable of safely lifting the trailer, and a jack stand to hold the trailer in the jacked position. The following steps are a guide to properly adjusting your trailer brakes. What this entails is the adjustment of the star wheel which in turn sets the brake shoe to brake drum clearance. This adjustment is important - as the brake shoes wear down, the clearance increases. The actuating mechanism must travel further to effectively apply the brakes and a point can be reached where the mechanism is no longer able to so.

Rv Awnings

Adjusting RV Trailer Brakes

How to Adjust RV Trailer Brakes

Park the trailer on firm and level ground.

Block the trailer tires on the opposite side securely so that no forward or rearward movement is possible.

Jack up the trailer following the manufacturers instructions.

Secure the trailer on jack stands of adequate capacity front and rear.

At the back of the wheel, on the brake backing plate, there is a small rubber plug near the bottom of the backing plate. Pry out this plug to give access to the star wheel adjuster.

Some trailers have a drop axle suspension system and the axle covers most of this adjusting hole making it difficult to use the brake tool. Patience will win out in the end if you keep at it.

Insert the brake adjuster tool and maneuver it so that the tool engages with the teeth in the star wheel. The star wheel looks like a gear with exposed teeth on the perimeter. On most trailers you would pull down on the tool handle which levers on the bottom of the hole and turns the star wheel up (as you are looking at it from the back of the wheel. Just to make it more difficult, the star wheel is located well inside and some maneuvering is required - a flashlight will help to locate the star wheel.

Turn the adjuster until the brake locks up, i.e. you can no longer rotate the wheel by hand. This centers the brake shoes on the brake drum so that they are in the correct position.

Now back off the star wheel 8 to 10 clicks or as specified by the manufacturer. The wheel should spin freely with no apparent drag to slow it down. A slight scraping noise is normal as the wheel turns.

Repeat this procedure for all the wheels.

Congratulations, you have successfully adjusted your own trailer brakes ... that wasn't so bad, was it?

New and Used Motor Home RV Values - Blue Book and NADA

Unlike the guides for automobiles which are based on analyses of actual car prices, the Blue Book and NADA guides are based primarily on a percentage of the manufacturer's suggested retail price (M.S.R.P.). These guides may be nowhere near the actual current resale value.

The guides include many options in the M.S.R.P. so it is hard to know which, if any, options you should include. This makes it easy for options to be charged twice. A better way to find the resale value of RV's is to look at other mobile homes of the same class, make and model. Check for similar amenities and base your price on that. If you are looking to buy a used RV, these comparisons can help you determine if the price quoted to you is a fair and reasonable price.

Rv Awnings

Motor home RV values should be based on actual selling prices of similar mobile homes, taking into consideration factors like age and overall condition. Are there dents or leaks? Has the unit been properly maintained on a regular basis? Do all of the appliances work? If this is a motorized rig, what is the mileage? Is it above or below the average? Does it run well for the mileage? Check all accessories that came with or were added, such as the air conditioner, satellite dishes, back up mirrors, awnings, solar panels and kitchen appliances. Does it all work? If you are selling your rig, making sure all of these items are in good condition can greatly increase your selling price.

New and Used Motor Home RV Values - Blue Book and NADA

Use the Blue Book and NADA values as a starting point and then adjust your price, or offer if you are buying, up or down according to the condition of the RV. You can increase the value of your motor home by sprucing it up. Add new curtains, makes sure it is spotless and update appliances. These simple maneuvers can add hundreds to your selling price. There are many variables in motor homes to be considered. Is it a towable or motorized? How many can it sleep? What appliances are included? What does the maintenance record tell you? If you have a late model motor home to sell, you may want to have an appraisal done to insure that you bet the best price possible. Some large RV dealers provide this service and will even broker a deal for you for a small fee.

The type of RV you want to sell or buy also has an influence on your profit or cost. Obviously, a luxury motor coach will garner a larger selling price than a travel trailer or pop-up camper. As a potential buyer you need to just decide how much you can spend for an RV, what type of motor home you want and what amenities you consider necessary, than with all of this in mind start looking around. There are dozens of online sites you can browse and check out the class of mobile home you want. Many of these sites have interior and exterior pictures along with a list of amenities. Of course you will want to find a dealer in your area so that you can physically inspect the used rig yourself before you buy. Ask to see the maintenance record if available. If you are buying from a dealer ask about a warranty.

The Blue Book and NADA guide are useful tools as a starting point. You need to take into consideration the age and condition of the unit, as well as amenities available. Nina Romanov

My RV Water Heater Won't Light

We get called so often to answer questions about things that seem to be broken in their travel trailer or motor home. It is not funny, but sometimes the fix is so easy to do we have to laugh a little. Before a person gets angry about us laughing about it, please know some of the basic fixes I am talking about are problems that I encountered myself. On certain ones I now laugh at myself because of the answer to the fix. This is my story about one instance.

On arriving at the campground, I began setting everything up. I am leveling the travel trailer, putting out the awning, hooking the water hose up, turning on the refrigerator, and lighting the water heater. Uh oh, the water heater will not light. There is a spark, but it will not light. I will not go into the whole story, but I will tell this audience that, on my own, I diagnosed the problem. I did not call the store for help. What I did manage, was to turn on the gas!!

Rv Awnings

I laugh now, but at the time, it was not funny. All experienced campers know the scenario. One gets stressed. Then your blood pressure rises. Surely, we are not going to ask for help. We can fix it. Oh, I left one out. Your spouse wants to know why it takes so long to light the water heater that worked a week ago. Then after scratching your head a few minutes, a light in your head goes off, and one goes and turn on the gas. Remember in the movie Christmas Vacation when Clark could not get the lights to work? If one does, then they can visualize that part of the movie. They can see what happens to us when we get frustrated about something not working.

My RV Water Heater Won't Light

So do not be upset that I laugh about this sometimes. First, please know I am not laughing at anyone. I am laughing about how often it happens. I am also laughing because I will never forget that I encountered the same problem. The story, told often, leaves a lot of people laughing at me!

Anytime one finds somethings not working in your RV, do not let yourself become Clark. RV water heaters can be complicated, but in some cases, the fix is not difficult no matter what the problem is. Stop for a moment, take a deep breath, and think about the most obvious and straightforward thing that might cause it not to work. When one figures out what that is, go and check it. I can not believe how often this will solve your problem. I am not saying that this is always the fix, I am just saying to try the most straightforward things first. If that does not fix it, then one can begin the stress and rising blood pressure scenario.

Luckily, there are only two main brands of RV water heaters. Atwood RV water heaters are probably one of the most recognized, but Suburban RV water heaters are extremely common too. With there only being two manufactures to deal with, help is not far away when one needs it.

I wish you the best of luck in your repairs and for safety in all your travels.

RV Awning Use, Care, Maintenance Tips, and Advice

RV awnings are a great feature to have on your RV. There are different types of RV awnings and they serve different purposes. There are window and door awnings that provide shade over your RV windows or entry door. There are slide out awnings that protect the slide out roof from debris and water. And there are patio awnings that provide us with shade when we want to sit and enjoy the outdoors. The awnings on your RV will provide years of reliable trouble free operation, if you take the time to do a little preventive maintenance and cleaning.

The fabric used on awnings is made from vinyl or acrylic. Some awnings have an aluminum or vinyl wrap-around weather guard that protects the awning fabric when it's in the travel position. When you open the awning for the first time each year, or if it has been stored for a while, you will need to inspect the awning fabric for any signs of mildew or stains. Vinyl awnings will mildew. If the awning fabric is fairly clean, normal cleaning can be accomplished with a soft brush and mild soap and water. Do not use oil based or abrasive cleaners. Clean and thoroughly rinse both sides of the awning. For more difficult stains, or mildew, there are after market commercial cleaners made just for awning fabrics.

Rv Awnings

Note: Carefully follow all awning and cleaner manufacturer directions.

RV Awning Use, Care, Maintenance Tips, and Advice

Inspect the awning fabric for any tears or excessive wear. Do not store the awning when the fabric is wet. Allow it to dry completely on both sides before storing. You can clean the awning hardware with the same cleaner you use to wash the RV. While the awning is out, inspect the awning hardware. The bottom awning brackets support most of the load from the awning. Check that the lag screws in the awning brackets are tight. Inspect the arm pivot holes for any enlarged holes or broken rivets in the handles. Check for a warped roller tube. If the roller tube is warped it will be noticeable when you roll the awning out. Inspect the end caps for secure mounting and broken rivets.

Caution: Do not attempt to remove the awning end caps. Spring tension can result in serious injury.

Make sure the awning rail is securely mounted to the side of the RV. Have any damaged or broken parts repaired before using the awning. In addition to cleaning and inspecting your awning there are a few things to keep in mind when using the awning. Always lower one end of the awning to allow for water run off. The weight from water pooling on the awning fabric can cause extensive and costly damage.

Wind gusts over 20 miles per hour can also cause extensive damage to the awning and to the RV. Never leave the awning out unattended. If everyone is leaving the campsite, store the awning in the travel position. When you go to bed, store the awning. Even when you are at the campsite, you should use awning tie downs to prevent any sudden damage caused by high wind gusts or a sudden storm. You have the option to position the awning arms straight down and stake them to the ground, but you will get better support if they're attached to the bottom awning brackets on the side of the RV. Remember, it is much easier to prevent damage to your awning than it is to repair it.

Used Motorcycle Camper Trailers For Sale

Should everything that is buy be new? I don't think so, especially for something as expensive as a motorcycle camper trailer. Is there a difference between a used trailer and a new one? Yes, you may find more wear and tear from a used trailer but in most cases this is all that you will find. But these wear and tear problems are perfect opportunities to negotiate better prices.

So how should you evaluate a used motorcycle camper trailer that is for sale?

Rv Awnings

There is not a book that explains what the value of a used motorcycle camping trailer is supposed to be. Do you have to look at how much you want to buy a camper for and look for trailers in the price range. Now, if the trailer in that price range doesn't have what you're looking for and the higher priced trailer do you may need to get your negotiation shoes out of the closet.

Used Motorcycle Camper Trailers For Sale

Now, when evaluating a trailer you first need to look for the most obvious problems. Does the trailer has any holes in the roof or along the side and seems. Holes mean that you will have leaking into the cab. And if the camping trailer is insulated you may have to repair the holes and replace the insulation. The insulation may have mold and that is not something that anyone wants to play with. Replacing mold in the insulation could be an expensive ordeal, especially, if it is a major mold problem.

Look for wear and tear, any holes in the wall panels. If you find any holes be sure to make mental notes or jot them down for later use. Does the roof need to be repainted or resealed. Resealing a roof does not take a lot to do, but your seller may not know this. If the roof needs to be resealed make a big deal of this to make the seller lower his/her price. Check out the wheels and the suspension. A rusted suspension could be a headache to fix and an extra cost you may not want to take on when first purchasing a used motorcycle trailer.

Make sure the wheels have bolts that are easy to find at the local hardware store. There is nothing worse than having a tire blowout and not being able to change the tire because a bolt gets striped while you trying to change it. You manage to get the bolt off but you are unable to replace it nor is the local service station.

Finding a Used motorcycle camper trailers for sale can be a great experience. The money savings can be extraordinary over buying new and it is possible of getting even more options for the buck with this option.

Upgrade Your RV With LED Lighting

If you do a lot of boondocking (no hookups while camping), then you know battery life is one of the most important things you must plan for, especially if you have a small battery bank. One great way to save a lot of power is to convert your existing incandescent lighting to LED lighting. LED stands for light emitting diode and provides light in a very different way than incandescent or fluorescent lighting sources. The biggest benefit for a boondocker is that LEDs require very little power to operate, so you won't have to be so conscious of switching off lights when you don't need them.

Just how much power can you save by going LED? In a typical travel trailer of say 27 feet with a super slide and a couple of bunk beds, you may have upwards of 20+ 12 watt incandescent bulbs. If you were to have all of these on at one time, you would be drawing around 20 amps of DC power. In a few hours, your single group 24 12-volt battery would be near dead. Even if you had two batteries, you wouldn't have much left to finish out a 2-day weekend without a battery recharge.

Rv Awnings

Now if you were to replace every interior incandescent bulb in this fictitious travel trailer with a 24 LED array warm color lamp, each drawing 190 mA, the total power consumption drops to 3.8 amps, over 5 times less power consumption. You wouldn't likely replace every incandescent bulb with a 24 LED array lamp but you could and if you did, you would be using 5 times less power, even if you had every light switched on.

Upgrade Your RV With LED Lighting

There are several different routes you can take when doing the LED lighting mod: individual lights, such as a night or reading light, all or some interior lights, interior and exterior, storage compartments, etc. Much will depend on you budget and coolness factor you are trying to achieve. Replacing every incandescent bulb may just break your piggy bank, but doing a few can still help save some battery power.

Using a single LED for a night light, like in the bathroom, can be a real life saver. Well, it may not save your life but if you have to get up at 2am to go, you won't be blinded by the light and you should be able to go right back to sleep. A single LED connected through a SPST toggle switch mounted on the bathroom light fixture can provide just enough light to do your business.

Perhaps you just want to change a few lights out, like the lights over your bed, that are generally too bright to read by. There are direct replacement LED lamps that require no modification to the lighting fixture, other than swapping bulbs. For this type of LED lamp, use the "warm white" type. The cool white LEDs provide a bluish tint to the light color and may not appeal to your reading tastes. The warm white LEDs provide a yellowish light color very similar to that of a normal incandescent bulb.

If you plan on replacing the main lights inside the RV and have the type of fixtures that contain two bulbs with a switch in the middle, you can replace just one of the bulbs to reduce cost. This way you not only save money, but you also can still provide more light when you need it by switching on the second bulb. For this case, you should consider LEDs that have a wide beam angle, at least 120 degrees. This is the angle at which light is projected from the lamp. The wider the better if you're trying to light up a large area. These lamps are typically configured in a flat package with many LEDs, as many as 36 in some cases. They simply affix to the fixture with Velcro and plug in just like a standard bulb.

Another cool LED mod is to fit a LED rope light under your RVs countertop. Many upscale RVs have this feature as a standard option but there is no reason you can't have this classy look either. First, have someone help you test fit the rope for length, ensuring you have enough for the whole countertop. Then get some double-sided tape and stick it to the cabinet or under the countertop where you want the rope to run. If you have any left over rope, drill a hole the size of the rope's diameter and run the excess through the hole. Just stick the rope to the tape and press firmly. You can also add a switch to control the rope power as well.

A step light is also another easy LED mod that consumes very little power. If you forget to turn it off, you don't have to worry since it can be on for days and still be easy on your battery. You can use a courtesy light or an amber side marker light. These mount with a couple of screws to the underside of the stairwell. Power can be run to an inconspicuous switch inside. Some even have light sensors so they can automatically turn on when it gets dark and turn off in the morning.

Outside compartments are also a great candidate for LED lights. These can be powered through a pin switch so that when you open the compartment door, the light turns on, and then off when you close the door. The color of the LED light is not so important as is the placement of the light. Compartments are usually rectangular in shape, so try and place the LEDs near the corners of the compartment. This way, you will get the most light to all parts of the storage area.

Finally, upgrading your RVs exterior lighting can make for a very clean look as well as improve safety going to the road. LED porch, marker, clearance, backup, turn, and running lights are all candidates for LED replacement. Fortunately for you, many companies, like Bargman for example, now make direct replacement fixtures that include everything you need to perform the upgrade. Just be sure to budget enough since total exterior lighting replacement can run in to the hundreds of dollars.

Tip: LED brake/tail lamps may not work with some older thermal flasher units found on some vehicles. An LED brake/tail lamp will require an electronic flasher/blinker unit which is commonly available at your local auto parts store. Just ask for the electronic equivalent of your thermal flasher.

Can You Live In A Camper Trailer Year Round?

Whether you have been hit by the travel bug or the economic crisis, a camper is a great means of budget accommodation and low cost travel. But is it something that can be use (or handled) year round?

For those of you wondering what a camper trailer is, let me first explain.

Rv Awnings

A camper trailer is basically a trailer that has a fold out tent attached. They can range from quite small one and two room opens, right up to rather expansive 4 or 5 room options with pull out kitchens and large awnings. They are a great way to travel because they are not as cumbersome as a caravan or motor home but they also have a lot more comfort than a normal tent.

Can You Live In A Camper Trailer Year Round?

So they may be great for traveling but can you live in a camper trailer year round?

The truth is that it basically depends on two things; you and your climate.

A camper trailer is a well-built structure and could easily be used year round whether you are traveling or staying in one place - the big question is, could you live in a camper trailer for a whole year?

Would you start feeling too cramped and contained? Or would it be something that you would be comfortable with?

And secondly, do you live in an area that would allow you to live in a camper year round? Because if your area get's a lot of snow then this could be a problem. Apart from the sheer coldness that you would have to handle - the canvas would struggle under the weight of a decent snow storm.

Retractable motorhome awnings are a popular choice for many campers because they offer a simple and efficient way of adding extra protection from the elements. There are two main types to choose from, these being manual and motorised versions. Many modern motorhomes now come with a retractable awning already installed, however even if you don't have a pre-installed design, there are many companies that can supply you with the necessary equipment to add your own.

The manual awnings are typically stored on the side of the motorhome and can be rolled up for easy storage. To release them you just pull on the support straps and your awning will open up. The support tracks will then slide out and help to guide your awning into position. Strong support arms are essential to carry the weight of the actual awning and to avoid sagging and wear. It is worth spending a bit of extra cash to prolong the life of the awning.

The motorised versions can be erected at the push of a button and are the most simple to use. They cost more than the manual one's but they can be really useful in high winds, in that you will not have to wrestle to erect them. Again, the support mechanisms are important because these will be more prone to rust and corrosion. The best kinds are made from aluminium or stainless steel, as these offer the most durability from rain and wind. Support tracks can also rust and start to stain the awning fabric which comes into contact with them, so look for quality materials that will last longer than the plain steel tracks.

Retractable Motorhome Awnings

There are many different styles and sizes of retractable motorhome awnings that will fit almost any motorhome on the market. The size you choose will depend on the size of your motorhome and your own requirements. You can purchase larger models that will extend out further and create more shade from the sun, but the downside is that they will be more prone to flapping around when it get's windy. This can create pressure on the supports and increase wear and tear.

For extra protection you can easily add side panels and blocking panels, which can be fitted to the awning wit a few simple steps. Many people choose this option to give them more privacy, or for added ventilation on hot sunny days. De flappers can also be bought to stop the awning from flapping in high winds at minimal cost. Another useful addition is the center support pole, which is great at diverting rain water from the top of the awning. Rain water can start to pool and cause sagging above your head.

As always, make sure you know the dimensions of your motorhome before you buy any awning so that it will fit. If you are going to customise yourself then talk to experienced sellers first so you know what tools you will need to make the process as simple as you can.
